Team Andrew: Soldier arrives home at Chattanooga airport

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Waving American flags, about a hundred people gathered at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport to welcome a wounded soldier home.

Army Specialist Andrew Smith was injured in March, while on patrol in Afghanistan. He stepped on an IED and lost both legs.

Smith, and his wife, Tori, have been at Walter Reed Medical Center. They hope to move home after Smith is finished with rehab next year.

Smith is on a 10-day leave and traveled home to speak at his church and high school. The couple will also be looking at donated land, and pick a lot for their new home.

The house will be built in a week by local non-profit, Steps 2 Hope, founded by Mark Wilson.

Wilson is working to raise the funds needed to build a home that will help Smith continue his recovery. He orchestrated this morning's homecoming celebration.

Family members, friends, and supporters gathered in a hangar at the airport to be there when Smith walked off the plane.

Smith told Channel 3 it was important to him to be able to take those steps, with the help of prosthetics and two canes.
