Google Maps goes underwater

(NBC) -- Google Maps is going under the sea , letting viewers navigate their way around the world's coral reefs, with no snorkels necessary.

Panoramic images of the reefs can now be seen on Google Maps Street View service.

Google has in the past offered underwater views of the sea floor and its terrain, but this is the first time that underwater photographs have been used in the mapping service.

The pictures were gathered by Catlin Seaview Survey. The project is studying the health of the world's reefs.
