Kerri Whitaker served the first of three rare perfect sets for Silverdale volleyball in the past three weeks.
Updated Friday, September 21 CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Silverdale Academy volleyball did it again.
The Seahawks' shocking run of extremely rare perfect sets added a third Friday afternoon when Macy Harris served 25 consecutive points in a 25-0 middle school win over Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
The Silverdale Academy varsity squad posted what was thought to be the area's first-ever 25-0 high school win when it shut out Sequatchie County three weeks ago. The feat was duplicated last week by the Seahawks' junior varsity team against Copper Basin.
Junior Kerri Whittaker served all 25 points in the varsity win, while freshman Caroline Couch earned the honors in the JV victory.
Three perfect sets in three weeks for the same program across three different levels of the sport? Leaves you wondering what the Seahawks could possibly do next.
Below is WRCB's original story on the first two perfect sets, which was published Thursday, September 20.
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Rhonda Hawkins couldn't believe the scoreboard two weeks ago when her Silverdale Academy volleyball team played Sequatchie County at the Choo Choo Classic in East Ridge.
Junior libero Kerri Whittaker started the game with a single serve, and followed with 24 more to record an extremely rare perfect set in a 25-0 win over the Indians.
"I think everyone was really scared that they'd mess up and she'd be really mad or something," freshman Caroline Couch said of the team's mindset over the final few points.
But the didn't mess up, and neither did Whittaker.
"We just kept going, and we got to 24 and I was just hoping I didn't serve it into the net," she said. "But it was so exciting for everyone because you don't hear of it happening much."
Or at all.
It's a feat that can be compared to bowling a 300-game or pitching a perfect game, but in the context of its sport, a shutout volleyball victory may actually be far more difficult.
Rally scoring is set up to increase the opportunity for points, so one mistake by any Silverdale player results in a point for the opponent. And with six players on the floor, there's plenty of opportunities to make an error.
"Back in the day when we played to 15 points, occasionally you'd see a 15-0 score. But 25 points in rally scoring? That's like a hole-in-one a couple of times over," said Hawkins, the Seahawks coach and former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player.
Hall of fame East Ridge coach Catherine Neely told our media partners at the Times Free Press that she'd never even heard of a 25-0 score happening, and describe it as "next to impossible."
Not for the Seahawks, though. For them, once wasn't even enough.
"The second time with Caroline, I was thinking no. This can't happen," Hawkins said.
But it did happen. Again.
Two weeks later Couch served all 25 points of a perfect set for Silverdale's junior varsity squad against Copper Basin.
"I didn't really notice until it got to 15 or 16 points, then I was like, maybe I can do this," Couch said with a smile.
Now the joke at Silverdale is who will do it next.
"I think maybe a few more people on the varsity team should do it, then maybe on the middle school," Couch joked.
Hawkins is taking a more practice approach. She's keeping her focus on the Seahawks push for the top seed in the upcoming Class A/AA playoffs, though she knows another lightning strike would certainly help make that happen.
"We just want to do well this season and have no regrets," Hawkins said. "We can't focus on this because it's something so rare. We don't expect it to happen again."
Then she paused, and added with a smile: "But ya, I'd love it if it would."
