Leaky roof cancels class at Central High, reopens Wednesday

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- A garbage can is the temporary fix for the leaky roof and wet floors at Central High School.

Students emailed pictures to Channel 3, showing hundreds of students piling into the gym as classes were canceled around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Outside an endless line of upset parents return an hour later for carpool.

Kelli Brown says, "My children constantly tell me about having to sit in the classroom with plaster falling when it rains. They have to push chairs against the walls and put out garbage cans because of flooding."

Parents escorted kids home one by one as Principal Finley King took our camera from room to room to show you the damage.

He knew he had a problem at 5:00 a.m. when he opened the doors.

"We held kids as long as we could until we got classrooms open," Finley says. "We knew we could get kids in some rooms. The other rooms, we knew we couldn't go in others."

Stephanie Lynn says the inconvenience hits home and her pockets.

"I had to leave work. I am a postal worker. We are doing mail count. That is my money. I have to leave work get my son and I'm losing money," she says.

Larry Bowman also left work to pick up his son.

"It's ran down and things need to be done. If Hamilton County has the money, why isn't it being fixed?"

King says Central has dealt with patchwork fixes for years, a problem made worse during the storms of 2011.

School board chairman Mike Evatt says the school system has more than half of the nearly $750,000 needed to fix it.

"I ask that people be patient in this situation because it is not a quick fix. It will take time."

The school board will meet Thursday in hopes to approve funding for the roof.

Evatt says the work will take a couple of months to complete.

Class is scheduled for Wednesday.
