CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- United Way's 23rd Annual Day of Caring was held Thursday as community volunteers lent a helping hand.

Groups of volunteers were dispersed throughout the region, completing a total of 35 projects.

United Way's Day of Caring benefits nonprofit agencies and includes everything from massive cleaning, to repair work.

"People who are volunteering get a lot out of it, because they have done something to make a difference in their community," Wayne Collins says.

"Money is tight, so when you get anyone to do anything like this, we like to show our appreciation as keeping it together," program director, Solomn McGee says.

All together the volunteers donated about 4,000 hours valued at nearly $100,000.

The event focuses on turning tragedy into triumph by honoring the victims of September 11th and their families through charitable service.
