Gearrin earns Braves' minor league honor

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (WRCB) -- Cory Gearrin is currently on the Atlanta Braves' big-league roster, but the Rhea County native will be honored Saturday for his work in the minors this year.

The right-handed reliever was named the team's Triple-A Pitcher of the Year Thursday as the franchise handed out its postseason farm club honors.

It's the third major honor Gearrin has won since being drafted by the Braves in 2007. The former Rhea County High and Mercer University standout was the Braves' Single-A Pitcher of the Year in 2009, and also won the Bill Lucas Award in 2011.

The Bill Lucas Award is given annually to the minor leaguer who exhibits the best character and sportsmanship.

Gearrin was called up when rosters expanded in early September for his fourth stint with the Atlanta bullpen this season.

In 39 minor-league appearances at Triple-A Gwinnett, Gearrin went 3-3 with a 2.30 ERA and did not allow a home run in 54.2 innings. He recorded 66 strikeouts opposite just 22 walks, and opposing hitters averaged just .215 against him.

Gearrin has made 15 major-league appearances for the Braves this season, registering a scant 0.69 ERA in 13 innings. He's allowed just one run while striking out 15 and walking just one.
