Rhea commissioners nix wheel tax, solid waste fee

DAYTON, Tenn. (AP) - Rhea County taxpayers won't immediately face a wheel tax or a solid waste fee, but those issues could be revisited by county commissioners.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, (http://bit.ly/OpN0B4 ) commissioners meeting in a work session on Monday heard from their Budget Committee. The panel recommended a $26 wheel tax and a $12 solid waste fee to offset an expected $677,000 spending deficit. The full commission rejected the proposal.

County Finance Director Bill Graham said the deficit can be countered by using money from the county's fund balance, but will drain it to $389,000 by the end of the year.

Commissioner Bill Hollin expressed concern that there is no money budgeted to address jail overcrowding.
