TWRA, trust raise money to purchase land in Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - The Land Trust for Tennessee and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency are working to raise money to purchase a 68-acre tract of land to add to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/QFbLrg), the land is being offered for $425,000 by the bank that foreclosed on it. The TWRA and the trust still need to raise about $148,000.

The trust has until Oct. 31 to complete its purchase option on the property near the confluence of the Hiwassee and Tennessee rivers. The land was part of a failed 600-acre residential development.

Last year, about 48,000 migrating cranes, geese, ducks and other waterfowl descended on the refuge for winter.
