Murray County student caught with gun on bus

Posted: Updated:

CHATSWORTH, GA (WRCB) - A Murray County student was arrested Tuesday afternoon after officials discovered he had a loaded gun on a school bus.

The teenaged male student attended Mountain Creek Academy, which is described as "a small group setting for at-risk students who may need small class sizes, individualized instruction, and higher achievement opportunities.

Murray County Schools spokesperson Mike Tuck said the student was on the bus traveling from Mountain Creek Academy to Bagley Middle School.  He said other students saw the gun, and informed the bus monitor, who notified Murray County Sheriff's officers.  The Sheriff's office is continuing an investigation as to whether the student was armed during the school day, or carried it only on the bus.

Tuck says he is not aware of any threats from the student.  He said the student could get a year's suspension under state law, although no final decision has been made.
