3 On Your Side: "It's finally over"

Posted: Updated:

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA. (WRCB)  --  After a year of dancing with her insurance company, homeowner Shearon Gass can finally look forward to a new chapter of her life, rebuilding her home.

Her home was destroyed when a massive tree fell on top of it during Tropical Storm Lee last year. Gass was inside asleep, and that was the last night she called her house a home.

The estimate to fix her house was around $106,000. Gass received only $42,000. The problem was work couldn't begin until the full amount was paid.

One year later, the home hadn't been touched and the county noticed, threatening to fine her. That's when she called Channel 3 and promises to begin work were made.

"I was thinking it wasn't going to happen; I thought it was another empty promise," says Gass.

However, an envelope in the mail proved otherwise. Insurance sent Gass a check for $63,402.31 giving her the full amount to begin work.

"I just cried for like ten minutes and I said it's over, it's finally over," says Gass. "It's actually starting and I'm not having to watch nature consume my home."

She doubts the money would have come without Channel 3's help.

"I just appreciate you guys, you've been wonderful. You made a life changing moment in my life so I appreciate it, I really do," Gass says.

The builder is expected to begin work next week. Gass hopes to be back at home by Christmas.
