CHICKAMAUGA, GA. (WRCB) -- Police are investigating three separate scenes, after a Chickamauga Police officer is shot by an armed suspect on Wilder Road in north Georgia.

The gunman opened fire, hitting a police officer and sped off.

Police say he then carjacked a woman, leading police on a high speed chase onto Interstate 75 where he crashed at the Tennessee/Georgia line.

The shooting happened after Chickamauga Police responded to a domestic call involving three people inside a jeep.

Michael Brooks challenged the two officers that stopped him.

"Apparently got in to an altercation with one of the officers, knocking part of the taser loose off the gun, and managed to take the duty weapon away from the officer," Chickamauga Police Chief Michael Haney says. "And this point, he began firing rounds."

Nearby, neighbors say they heard about six shots, one of them hitting Officer Ira Taylor, just above the knee.

A BOLO was issued as Brooks took off.

"One of my detectives was on the way home on Three Notch Road in Catoosa County and spotted the vehicle that the BOLO had been broadcast for," says Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson.

He stopped, where he discovered Brooks ditched his vehicle and carjacked a woman with the officer's gun.

"Moments later, one of our officers, one of our deputies spotted the vehicle on Battlefield Parkway going eastbound," says Sheriff Wilson.

And the chase was on, going up I-75 through rush hour traffic.

"Attempted many times to try to stop the suspect," Sheriff Wilson says. "He refused to stop."

Traffic came to a halt once deputies managed to stop Brooks, just passed the Tennessee state line.

"He turned around and was coming back southbound in the northbound lanes," Sheriff Wilson says. "At that point, a Walker County Sheriff's Office Deputy and a Catoosa County Sheriff's Office Deputy performed a maneuver and squeezed him in and were able to take him in to custody without anyone being injured."

Investigators say Brooks is from Lindale, California and has no criminal history.

He faces a long list of charges, including aggravated assault and carjacking.

Also in the car with him, a young woman from Georgia and a man from Pennsylvania. They currently don't face any charges.

The GBI is investigating the shooting.

Officer Taylor is expected to be okay.
