CHATTANOOGA, TN (Times Free Press) -- Delta Air Lines on Thursday is to restart mainline service between Chattanooga and Atlanta after 17 years, and the carrier will do it with one of the biggest jets flying into Chattanooga Airport.

Delta ended the mainline service in December 1995 and filled its routes with affiliate airlines such as Atlantic Southeast Airlines.

Trebor Banstetter, a Delta spokesman, said the airline will fly one 125-seat DC-9-50 each day between the cities. Its other daily flights on its affiliates will continue to be serviced by smaller aircraft.

Delta will continue to fly nine daily flights from Chattanooga to Atlanta and two daily to Detroit, officials said.
