GATLINBURG, TN (AP) -- Great Smoky Mountains National Park spokeswoman said the Astronomy Club of Asheville, N.C., will put on the event on Sept. 7 atop Purchase Knob. That's where the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center is located in the park.

The knob has a 270-degree unobstructed view of the night sky and Smokies Superintendent Dale Ditmanson said visitors are often amazed at how many stars they see from the mountains, once away from highly lighted cities.

The event begins at 7 p.m. EDT and it is limited to 60 people. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (828) 926-6251.

Because the knob is at 5,000 feet elevation, layers of clothing are recommended.
