Cohutta woman robbed by men posing as officials

COHUTTA, GA. (WRCB) -- Detectives with the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office are looking for two robbery suspects, who they say tricked an elderly woman into opening her home.

It happened Tuesday night on Earnest Road in Cohutta.

Johnnie Earnest tells Channel 3, two men in their 20s came to her door claiming to be with fire protection services.

They wanted to check her smoke detectors and threatened to fine the 84-year-old if she didn't comply.

That's when the two men pushed her down and searched her home for valuables.

The police report says the suspects even searched Earnest's clothing, before stealing her phone and checkbook.

The victim was not injured and was able to provide a description of the suspects.

The Whitfield County Sheriff's Office is investigating, but calls this an isolated incident.

They urge residents to ask for credentials before opening a door to a stranger.

Sheriff Scott Chitwood says all officials should carry a badge and many travel in a marked car.

Stay with for updates as they become available.
