Giants OF Cabrera suspended for positive drug test

Posted: Updated:

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended Wednesday for 50 games without pay after testing positive for testosterone.

The commissioner's office says the suspension is effective immediately. Major League Baseball said on Wednesday that Cabrera tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing substance, which violates MLB's joint drug prevention and treatment program.

The MVP of the All-Star game last month, Cabrera is batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season with San Francisco.

The former New York Yankees' star was a bust in his brief stint with the Atlanta Braves before heading West to rejuvenate his career with the Giants. He ruffled the feathers of several ex-Braves' teammates in July when he taunted the Atlanta dugout during a home run trot at Turner Field.
