Senator Bob Corker visits Y-12

Posted: Updated:

OAK RIDGE, TN (News Sentinel) -- Following a briefing today at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant, U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said officials are moving swiftly to address the problems uncovered by a July 28 security breach..

"At this point, I'm satisfied that they understand this was a very serious matter, and that they're making multiple changes to ensure, to the best of their ability, that this never happens again," the senator said in a telephone interview soon after leaving the Oak Ridge plant.

While three protesters penetrated the plant's security systems and defaced the exterior of the plant's storehouse for bomb-grade uranium, Corker emphasized that they were never "anywhere close to the materials that are so sensitive."

Asked if the plant's PIDAS (Perimeter Intrusion Detection and Assessment System) worked as it's supposed to work, Corker said based on his briefings today he believes the problems associated with the security breach were not due to a failure of technology but more about "human error."
