North Georgia students get GED and a paycheck in one stop

Posted: Updated:

ROCK SPRING, GA (WRCB) - Georgia Northwestern Technical College's Youth Success Academy is described by students as "a second chance" as they earn their GED.  The free program is federally funded through Workforce Investment Act.  Students who commit to the program receive everything they need, ranging from school supplies, to technology, to the fees for their computerized GED test.

The program serves low-income young people between the ages of 16-21 who did not complete high school. Applicants are given the Test for Adult Basic Education assessment, which determines what they know, and what they need to learn.

Instructor Stephanie Kinman said students frequently return to the classroom, bursting with pride as they announce, "I've passed my GED!"

Students are paid $9 for each day "and that could be doubled for child care," according to Kinman.

For more information call GNTC's Youth Success Academy at 706-764-3783.
