LONDON — It was an Olympic gold rush like never before for athletes with East Tennessee ties.
Seven gold medals in the London Games were won for the United States by athletes who went to either high school or college in the Knoxville area.
Former local high school swimmers Davis Tarwater (Webb School) and Claire Donahue (Lenoir City) were part of gold-medal relay efforts.
University of Tennessee athletes added five golds to the haul. Three came on the Olympic Stadium track (Aries Merritt, DeeDee Trotter and Tianna Madison), and another two were from the basketball court ( Candace Parker, Tamika Catchings).
