Candidate for district attorney files for election recount
CATOOSA COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - Channel 3 has confirmed Doug Woodruff, candidate for district attorney in the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit, has formally asked for a recount.
Buzz Franklin, who has held the position since 1997, beat Woodruff by less than 50 votes in the Georgia Primary election.
Woodruff tells Channel 3 the results of the election were certified Tuesday. He traveled to Atlanta Wednesday to file a request for a recount with the Georgia Secretary of State's office.
"In a race where you had nearly 22,000 people cast a ballot, and you had a difference of just 42 votes, it is a possibility that machines misread paper ballots," Woodruff told Channel 3 in a phone interview. "I think it's important that we get an accurate outcome."
Under Georgia law, Woodruff is entitled to a recount if the race is decided by a margin of one percent or less.
Woodruff says he expects to hear from the state tomorrow about how long the recount will take.
Our calls to Buzz Franklin for comment went unanswered.
