McMinn County inmate found dead in cell
ATHENS, TN (WRCB) -- An accused burglar arrested a week ago after being discovered and detained by his alleged victim was found dead in the McMinn County Justice Center Wednesday afternoon.
Kevin Dale Cranfield, 47, arrested a week ago after being discovered hiding under a bed by the apparent victim of an apartment burglary, was found dead in his jail cell Wednesday afternoon. A corrections officer came across Cranfield's body in an apparent hanging after 2:00 p.m. in the McMinn County Justice Center, as confirmed by McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy.
Few details have been released, and the death has not been ruled as a suicide. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the death.
Corrections and nursing staff responded to attempt to save Cranfield, using a an automatic external defibrillator that was recently installed in the jail.
The same corrections officer who discovered Cranfield's body spoke with him earlier in the afternoon.
Cranfield was in jail following the arrest of allegedly burglarizing the home of Kenny Edgemon, a member of the National Guard, who subdued Cranfield once he was discovered hiding under a bed in Edgemon's apartment.
