Russell's walk-off lifts Lookouts past Barons

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Kyle Russell hit a two-out, two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth to lift Chattanooga to a 5-3 extra-innings win over Birmingham Tuesday night in the opener of a five-game series at AT&T Field.

The Lookouts (19-12) have now won eight of their last ten and extended their lead to a game-and-a-half over Jackson in the Southern League's North Division.

Chattanooga erased a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth and Luis Nunez's solo home run in the eighth that forced extra innings. Rafael Ynoa led off the tenth with a single and then scored the game-winner when Russell blasted a first-pitch fastball over the right field wall.

Matt Magill struck out seven in six innings and allowed three runs, all in the fourth. Chris Withrow and Logan Bawcom (3-3) backed him up with four scoreless innings of relief.

Chattanooga's late-inning heroics wasted a standout start by Birmingham's Scott Carroll, who gave up just one hit in five shutout frames. Three Barons relievers then combined to surrender all five Lookouts' runs in the final 4.2 innings.

Ynoa had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, which is now the second-longest in the Southern League this season. He also walked twice and scored two runs.

The two teams will play game two of the five-game set at 11:15 a.m. ET Wednesday morning.
