SODDY-DAISY, TN (WRCB)- After several hours and a lot of manpower, Hamilton County search crews found the body of a Soddy-Daisy man in Big Soddy Creek.
Police have identified the man as Rodney Dale Miller of Soddy-Daisy. Emergency workers say high waters made the search difficult.
"The call came in that there was a missing person, possible drowning," says Lt. Jeff Gann with the Soddy-Daisy Police Department.
Police say around 4 o'clock Sunday morning they got a call about a man who went missing in the waters of Big Soddy Creek.
They say Miller was doing some late night swimming with a group of friends, when they lost sight of him.
"Eyewitnesses that were there as well said that everybody was fine and everybody was cutting up and then they just didn't see him anymore," says Gann.
Lt. Gann says when daylight broke, crews from the Soddy-Daisy, Sale Creek and Sequoyah Fire Departments took to the water, along with the Hamilton County S.T.A.R.S unit.
"We were not successful on that search."
Gann says with the recent rain, the creek was more like a river.
"The water was swiftly moving, roughly 12 knots," he says.
The waters were too risky for the search crews.
"Based on the risk of actually hurting the personnel or endangering some of the emergency personnel, Hamilton County Sheriff's Department was notified."
The sheriff's office used its underwater camera and located Miller's body.
"I personally knew him. A super nice guy. Never had any kind of dealings with me as far as in the line of work I do. It's just another one of those horrible times," says Gann.
Investigators say it is too early in the investigation to tell if drugs or alcohol were a factor, at this point, calling it a horrible accident.
Holidays mean family gatherings, which can result in hugs and kisses, and of course, some social awkwardness.
