CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Lauren Ellis, currently serving in the U.S. Navy and a 2006 Soddy-Daisy High School graduate, was grazed in the shoulder Friday, in the early morning Colorado theater shooting that left 12 people dead and 59 others injured.
A former teacher and classmate say, thankfully, she is expected to be ok.
"I taught her in school. A great kid. She went into the Navy right out of high school and I'm an old Navy guy, so we kept up through Facebook and email and such. She's a special kid, a really smart kid," says Trevor Fuller.
Fuller taught Lauren Ellis English at Soddy-Daisy High School.
He was more than relieved to hear she survived the deadly shooting.
"She's not in the hospital. I saw one of the news clips, actually on the national news, I saw her in the news clip and she looked good. I'm sure emotionally though, she's a wreck. That's going to leave a big scar for her," he says.
Fuller says Lauren just finished a deployment and was recently stationed in Denver.
He says as soon as he heard the news about the shooting he contacted her.
"Through messages while ago, she told me that a little while ago, she was grazed in the shoulder. Her friend is not so lucky. I don't have any real details about the friend, I don't want to speculate. But that's as far as it goes right now."
On her Facebook page, Lauren thanks everyone for the prayers, saying "Thank you so much! Prayers are much needed for my friend right now."
"First and foremost I'm really happy that she's doing fine," says Ryan Fuller.
Ryan graduated with Lauren in 2006. Both he and his dad say they are still processing the news.
"It's a tragedy," he says. "It's ridiculous what happened. But I'm glad that she came out on the better end."
"You know I saw on her Facebook how excited she was to go to the movie. And an hour later, it just all comes undone," says Trevor.
Ryan says if her could talk to Lauren, he would tell her, "I'm glad you're doing ok. I'm horribly sorry that this happened to you, that this happened at all. If you ever get the chance, just say hey."
From what Trevor Fuller has gathered, he says Lauren is expected to be okay.
He says she was checked out by medical personnel and she is nursing her wound right now.
A statement issued by the Department of Defense noted one sailor was injured, Lauren Ellis, and another that was known to have been at the theatre that evening is currently unaccounted for.
Two airmen were also injured in the incident. The Navy and the Air Force are working with the families of these service members to ensure they have the care and attention they need.
The DoD also confirmed that the alleged gunman in this incident, James Holmes, is not a past or current member of any branch or component of the U.S. Armed Forces.
