CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Dontay Hampton worked tirelessly the last four years to climb his way up the depth chart at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Now the former walk-on turned starting point guard will have to do the same over the next six months just to get a shot at finishing his college career.
Chattanooga officials confirmed Thursday that Hampton tore his right ACL and will miss at least the first two months of the season. The former CSAS standout suffered the injury during an individual workout over the weekend. He will have surgery next week before embarking on six months of rehab.
Hampton played in every game last season for the Mocs, averaging 7.1 points per contest. The rising senior was set to enter fall camp as the starting point guard, but will now turn that role over to incoming freshman Farad Cobb.
Hampton redshirted the 2008-09 season, which UTC officials said almost certainly rules out the possibility of getting an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA.
