Cherokee County officials investigating man's death

MURPHY, NC (WRCB) -- Cherokee County officials are investigating the death of a 61-year-old man found in his residence in the Ranger community.

Sunday afternoon around 12:40 p.m., EMS responded to a call of a sick person.  When they arrived, the found the apparently lifeless body of Billy Ray Arp.

Shortly after arrival, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene as the nature of the death appeared suspicious.

Investigators, along with a mobile crime scene team from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, are working together in the investigation. The cause and manner of death is still to be determined.

The Sheriff Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating anyone that may have been walking along U.S. 64 West between Highway 294 and the Tennessee State line between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon on Sunday.
