Cartersville wins Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship in Dalton

DALTON, Ga. (WRCB) -- Cartersville was king Sunday at one of the largest 7-on-7 passing camp in the South.

The Purple Hurricane beat Martin Luther King, Jr., 24-12, in the championship bracket final to claim top honors at the second annual Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship.

A field of 31 teams from six different states converged on Dalton Saturday for the two-day event. The top four teams from each of the four pools advanced from pool-play to Sunday's championship bracket.

"We do a lot of 7-on-7's every summer, but this is an excellent event because it's by far the best competition we've seen," said Pierce County (Ga.) head coach Sean Pender. "I liked how many teams came from different states. There was a team here from Arkansas, teams from Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia.

"It was really great to see some different programs and play teams from all across the Southeast."

Kentucky and Alabama were also represented among the 31 teams.

Ten local teams took part in the event, but Baylor and North Jackson were the only area programs to qualify for the championship bracket.

The level of competition wasn't the only draw for coaches. With such a large field, each competing program was guaranteed more games than other 7-on-7 camps.

"Reps, reps, reps. That's why we're here. We need the reps to get better for the upcoming year," said Pender. "The competition part of it is great, but obviously the more games you win the more games you get to play. This tournament is unique because it has a double-elimination bracket in tournament play, meaning we get to play a few extra games."

Dalton won the consolation bracket, which included fellow locals McCallie, Ringgold, LaFayette, Southeast Whitfield, Northwest Whitfield, Christian Heritage and Coahulla Creek.
