Braves place McCann on paternity leave

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves have placed catcher Brian McCann on paternity leave and recalled catcher J.C. Boscan from Triple-A Gwinnett.

McCann's wife, Ashley, gave birth to the couple's first child Friday afternoon. McCann had homers in four straight games before the All-Star break, but his fill-in David Ross kept that streak alive for Atlanta catchers with a three-run homer in Friday night's 7-5 win over New York.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez says the team is waiting until Saturday to make a roster move to replace rookie shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who will miss at least a month with a broken right pinky. Simmons hurt his finger on a head-first slide Sunday in Philadelphia.

Gonzalez says the Braves could trade for a shortstop.

Veteran shortstop Jack Wilson, who had been the backup for Simmons, started Friday night's game against the New York Mets before leaving with a dislocated finger. Martin Prado, who started in left field, had to switch spots as the emergency shortstop.
