Vols' Rivera named to Mackey Award watch list

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE (UT) -- Tennessee senior tight end Mychal Rivera has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2012 John Mackey Award.

The honor, which goes out annually to the top collegiate tight end, will be presented as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 6, 2012.

Rivera is from Valencia, Calif. and caught 29 passes for 344 yards and one touchdown while starting all 12 games for the Vols in 2012. Rivera finished third in the SEC in receptions and yards receiving in 2011 and also ranked second on the Vols in both categories.

In 25 career games, he has caught 40 passes for 466 yards and one touchdown.

No Tennessee player has won the Mackey Award, although Jason Witten (2002) and Luke Stocker (2010) were semifinalists for the honor.
