Crews continue fighting Ocoee wildfires

Posted: Updated:

POLK COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) -- Fire crews were hoping rain would help them get the upper hand on a wildfire in Polk County, believed to have been sparked by last week's storms.

U.S. Forestry Service Spokeswoman Nina Barrow says crews conducted a burnout operation Monday, using two choppers, but haven't been able to gain control of the fire.

Authorities say trees knocked down a power line and caught fire during last Thursday's storm.

Because of hot, dry conditions, the fire is spreading in the Ocoee area of the Cherokee National Forest and has burned hundreds of acres.

The Chilhowee campgrounds, Highway 77 and all Chilhowee trails are closed.

Stay with for updates as they become available.
