Harrison Resident: "It makes you feel violated"

Posted: Updated:

HARRISON, TN. (WRCB)  --  People who live near Hidden Branch Road in Harrison leave their lights on longer at night. Instead of waving at passing vehicles they watch them with suspicion.

"We've had a rash of people breaking into cars," says one resident.

Residents tell Channel 3 there's been at least 15 vehicle break-ins in the last two weeks and a couple of homes were also burglarized.

David Pierce has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. He considered it one of the safest places to call home, until now.

He says burglars stole more than $1,000 of county and personal equipment out of his public works truck. At the time, it was sitting in his driveway.

"They got three cars the night they got me, skipped a night. The next night they got six cars," Pierce explains. "It makes you feel violated."

Residents believe a group of skilled thieves are behind the burglaries. It usually happens when the homeowners leave for work or go to bed at night. They target unlocked vehicles first, taking anything they can carry.

"The compacter they got out the back of my truck weighs at least 200 pounds, so it wasn't one kid," says Pierce.

Neighborhood watch members are sleeping with one eye open. They say one thief has already been arrested and with the help of the sheriff's office more arrests will follow.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office says they are investigating the situation but no one has been charged in connection with the break-ins.
