Georgia's Schmitt sets another US record winning 200 free OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - University of Georgia rising senior Allison Schmitt added another race to her growing Olympic schedule by winning the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. swimming trials Thursday night.
Schmitt broke her own American record with a time of 1 minute, 54.40 seconds, the best in the world this year. Already the 400 free winner in Omaha, she set the previous national record in the 2009 world championships.
Missy Franklin claimed the second 200 spot on the team for London, rallying from fifth place at the first turn to take the runner-up spot in 1:56.79.
Dana Vollmer and Lauren Perdue finished third and fourth, assuring themselves of being in the pool for the 800 free relay.
Another University of Georgia swimmer, Shannon Vreeland, finished fifth and will likely join sixth-place Alyssa Anderson in London as potential relay swimmers.
Phelps wins 200-meter butterfly OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Michael Phelps stayed on course to swim eight events at the London Olympics with a dominating win in the 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. swimming trials Thursday night.
He trailed Davis Tarwater at the first and second turns, but there's was never any doubt that Phelps would pull ahead in his signature stroke. He surged ahead on the third leg and was a body-length ahead of the field when he touched in 1 minute, 53.65 seconds.
The real race was for second place - and a spot on the Olympic team. Tyler Clary, who lost out to Phelps in the 400 individual medley, rallied from behind for a time of 1:55.12, edging Bouiller's time of 1:55.79.
Clary pumped his right fist and pounded the water when he saw the scoreboard.
Lochte, Grevers drop 100 free; Phelps out of back OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Ryan Lochte has scratched from the final of the 100-meter freestyle, giving 2008 Olympic star Jason Lezak a chance to qualify for the London Games.
The 36-year-old Lezak was the ninth-fastest semifinal qualifier Thursday night. But Lochte, who tied for fifth, was merely trying to improve his chances of landing on the 400 free relay. His focus Friday will be on the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke.
Lezak is best remembered for his brilliant anchor leg on the 2008 relay, saving Michael Phelps' bid for eight gold medals.
David Walters also moved into the final when Matt Grevers joined Lochte on the scratch list. Grevers is a backstroke specialist but hopes to be on the 400 free relay.
As expected, Phelps dropped the 200 backstroke from his Friday schedule.
Baylor's Carbone sets another personal record OMAHA, Neb. (WRCB) -- Christian Carbone won't be going to London, but the recent Baylor School graduate made the most of his first trip to the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials this week.
Carbone set a new personal record Thursday with a time of 2:20.05 in the prelims of the men's 200-meter breastroke. The mark ranked as the 71st-fastest time in the field of 129 swimmers.
Carbone started the week by setting a new personal best, as well as a new Baylor Swim Club record, with the 30th-fastest time in the 400-meter individual medley (4:26.11) on Monday.
