BRADLEY COUNTY, TN (WRCB)- Some major changes are coming to a busy interstate interchange in Bradley County. Exit 20 is getting an overhaul.
For the past several years, both local and state leaders have been pushing for TDOT to fix the traffic headache that is Exit twenty.
Now their concerns are being addressed. Construction will start in a matter of weeks.
"Every day, all day. There's not a good time or a bad time. It's like this all the time," says State Representative Kevin Brooks.
Traffic at the exit 20 interchange off I-75 in Cleveland is always slow moving.
"APD-40 and this area has been on the blue print for many, many years," says Brooks.
He says thankfully, help is on the way.
"This TDOT Commissioner is saying, they do need help in Bradley County. They do need help at exit 20. They're not making this up!"
"From TDOT's perspective, we have a true safety problem here," says TDOT Deputy Commissioner and Chief Engineer Paul Degges.
Degges says three projects are coming to the interchange. First will be the widening of the Northbound I-75 off-ramp to keep traffic flowing.
"We're going to bring our maintenance forces and do a quick hit type project," he says.
Next will come the widening of the overpass bridge.
"We have our right of way and our utility plans ready for release right now," says Degges.
Finally, there will be an added interchange between I-75 and Highway 11, with hopes of bringing in new business.
"Soon we'll return to this same spot. We'll have bigger ramps, a five lane bridge and a new interchange right behind us. We can't wait for it to be here," says Brooks.
The ramp widening project will begin on July 9th. Most of that work will be done a night.
TDOT is hoping to break ground on the new bridge and APD-40 interchange next Spring and Summer.
Last year the drought meant more grains and less movement from the turkeys. In 2016 they were heavier, but also had more fat.
