Whitwell man gets six years probation in fatal crash

MARION COUNTY, TN (Times Free Press) -- A Whitwell, Tenn., man netted six years' probation in a guilty plea to homicide charges stemming from a May 2011 crash that killed a 41-year-old Marion County mother and grandmother, according to court records.

Donnie Lee Slatton, 40, pleaded guilty this week to criminally negligent homicide in the death of Phillis Lynn Watts, who left behind a son, daughter and grandson, Marion County Circuit Court records state. Criminally negligent homicide is a class E felony.

Slatton was ordered by Circuit Court Judge Rusty Graham to serve six years of probation and 100 hours of community service at no less than eight hours per week, records state.

The victim's mother, Dale Watts, said Friday that she and her family were not satisfied with the judgment but will "have to live with it."
