MEIGS COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) -- A pilot escaped injury when his plane went down in the Hiwassee River Sunday afternoon. It happened in Meigs County around 4:30 p.m. near Highway 60.
Meigs County officials say the pilot of the two-seater plane had mechanical difficulties and lost power.
He was able to put the plane down in shallow water and a boater took him to shore.
"Anytime you take an aircraft down, I think it's very fortunate to have any survivors landing in the water," said Tony Finnell, Meigs County Emergency Services Director. "Of course, I'm not a pilot but undoubtedly he did a great job."
The pilot, who was unhurt in the crash landing, has been identified as Andy Montgomery of Rhea County.
A recovery vessel is expected to come sometime Monday to get the plane out of the water.
