Dalton Police make arrest in double homicide

Posted: Updated:

WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA (WRCB)- A Whitfield County man is behind bars, charged with two counts of murder. The double homicide happened Sunday morning at a home in Dalton.

27-year-old Emilio Christopher Canales is accused of shooting and killing his father and brother and sending his mother to the hospital.

Dalton Police say at this point it appears the shooting stemmed from some sort of domestic dispute.

"It's isolated, apparently a family-type situation," says Bruce Frazier, with the Dalton Police Department.

Just before 9:30 Sunday morning, Dalton Police responded to a shots fired call at a home on Dude Street.

Moments before they arrived, 50-year-old Deborah Canales, with a gunshot wound to her back, ran for her life to a neighbor's house.

"She identified her son as the shooter," says Frazier.

Deborah told police her son, 27-year-old Emilio Christopher Canales opened fire, shooting at his father, 50-year-old Emilio Canales, Sr. and his brother, 31-year-old Emilio Francisco Canales, before turning the gun on her.

"They found her husband and also her other son, the shooter's brother, were dead on arrival," says Frazier.

Canales fled the scene. A Whitfield County Sheriff's Deputy was able to track him down a short time later, and arrested him without incident.

In the meantime, crime scene investigators spent the afternoon combing the scene for evidence, recovering a gun in the front yard.

"There's a crime scene investigator from the Dalton Police Department, and also a crime scene investigator from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation."

Police say they will work quickly to get to the bottom of what caused this to happen in the first place.

"As far as what touched it off, we just believe it's just a domestic situation. We're working on putting some of those details together," says Frazier.

Canales faces two counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault. He is being held at the Whitfield County Jail.

His mother, Deborah, is in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton.
