Warlick adds Kyra Elzy as assistant coach

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee coach Holly Warlick has hired Kyra Elzy as her new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, bringing another former Lady Vols player back to campus.

Warlick announced the hiring Thursday.

Elzy had been an associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Kentucky the past four years. She will fill the job held by Mickie DeMoss before announcing April 2 she was joining the WNBA's Indiana Fever. Elzy was on Tennessee's national championship teams in 1997 and 1998.

Warlick says Elzy is a phenomenal recruiter and knows Tennessee's expectations firsthand.

Elzy was just the fifth freshman in Tennessee history to start her first game, and she was the first player to earn a master's degree while playing. She helped care for her grandmother, who had Alzheimer's, until her death in 2001.
