After The Storm: Sequatchie County

Posted: Updated:

SEQUATCHIE COUTNY, TN (WRCB) -- In parts of Sequatchie County, an EF1, EF2 and EF4 tornado touched down, with the city of Dunlap taking a hit.

Even though it has been a year since three powerful tornadoes that touched down in Dunlap, there are still scars that remind people of what happened on April 27th, 2011.

"Just damage to homes and businesses. Lots of trees. More trees than you can imagine," says Dunlap Mayor Dwain Land.

Last April the community came together to clean up after an EF2 tornado hit the town.

A house on Cherry Street shows signs of repair today.

"Out of the 52 years I've lived here, there's never been anything like that," says Land.

The city's maintenance building is still without a roof. It will be torn down and FEMA money will help them build a new one.

"Future plans are to expand the park. So some good will come out of the storm," says Land.

"When I saw the hail coming, I said 'Get in the closet! Get in the closet!' And I covered them up with pillows," says Dunlap resident Cindy Longson.

That day on Hickory Street Longson, a friend, and five small children huddled in a closet as the tornado passed.

She came out to find big Maple trees in her yard, gone.

"I mean, every tree in my yard practically was over. Trees were down everywhere. It was just here and there just like that. It was really bad. The kids were just screaming, scared to death. I mean it was just here and gone. It was just unreal," says Longson.

Almost every piece of firewood you see stacked in yards came from trees downed in the storm.

But Longson and others say, if that is the worst of it, they have a lot to be thankful for.

"Everyone was ok. We was just a little rattled. We was really lucky," says Longson.

No lives were lost in Sequatchie County due to the tornadoes. One man died in a drowning-related accident shortly after the storms.
