APISON, HAMILTON COUNTY -

(WRCB) - Last April's storm devastated the Apison area, but in the midst of the loss there were stories of hope. One of those stories comes from three young men dubbed the "bathtub brothers".

"We ended up on our backs in this mess," said Jason Clemons last April, pointing to the place off London Lane where he landed.

David Mercer, Jason Clemons, and Terrell Maffett huddled in their bathtub when an EF-4 tornado plowed through their home.

The force lifted it 150 feet and tossed everything, even the bathtub.

All three walked away unharmed.

"We are brothers now, bathtub brothers," joked Mercer days after the storm.

The title stuck.

Now a year later, the three get a lot of jokes about three grown men huddled in a tub.

"All the time," said Mercer.

"I can't say on TV," he laughed when asked to repeat those jokes.

All jokes aside, these three say last April changed them.

"I wake up every day and thank God for the next breath," said Clemons, sitting on the only wall left of their rental home. The owner chose not to rebuild.

"I try to take advantage of every day, live each day with meaning," added Maffett.

The trio talks about that day occasionally, but try not to dwell on it.

"It kind of helps to rehash it, relive it a little bit, and then put it back away and leave it for another day," explained Clemons.

And humor doesn't hurt.

These friends, turned brothers, say they wouldn't have it any other way.

"At this point I'm alive so I'll take that joke for the rest of my life," said Maffett.
