ATLANTA (MLB) -- Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman has been named National League Player of the Week for the period of April 16-22, 2012. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Freeman hit .478 (11-for-23), good for third in the National League, while pacing the Majors with 14 RBI, a 1.087 slugging percentage and five doubles on the week. In addition, his 25 total bases were tops among National Leaguers while his three home runs tied for first.

Freeman also ranked among league leaders with seven runs scored (T-2nd), 11 hits (T-3rd) and a .481 on-base percentage (5th). The 22 year-old played a key role in the Braves' 5-1  ecord during the week, recording five multi-RBI games.

On Friday, April 20th, Freeman went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in a 9-1 Braves victory at Arizona. In Thursday's matchup at Chase Field, the California native set a career high with five RBI while notching his second career two-homer game in a 10-2 Atlanta win. Freeman had tied his previous career best in Wednesday night's matchup against the New York Mets, driving in three in a 14-6 Braves victory at Turner Field.

After hitting safely in five of six games last week, including four multi-hit efforts, the Braves second round pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft saw his batting average climb to .283 on the season.

His 15 RBI currently rank third in the National League. This is Freeman's first career weekly award.
