3 On Your Side: Thieves hit Athens business again

Posted: Updated:

McMINN COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) --  Two McMinn County business owners say thieves are going to put them out of business.

Morgan Well Drilling was hit again over the weekend.

The company is out tens of thousands of dollars.

Its owners are hoping someone can put a stop to the string of burglaries, and help keep their business open.

"Someone had opened our locked gate and taken another trailer," owner, Karen Morgan says.  "We were just flabbergasted that this had happened once again."

Tony and Karen Morgan have been in business nearly 12 years. The couple owns Morgan Well Drilling on Highway 11 in Athens. These days they work as hard to guard their product, as they do selling it.

"We've added locks and chains, trying to detour thieves," Karen says. "But, it just keeps happening."

"Don't have to work or nothing," Tony says. "They just come get it."

Over the last six years thieves have taken $80,000 worth of trailers, four-wheelers and golf carts.

Sunday, they hit again, swiping a $1,600 trailer.

"It's very disheartening to work every day and have all this equipment that you use every day in your business, and someone just helps themselves," Karen says.

The Morgan's have added indoor cameras, lights and locks. Outdoor cameras may be the next investment.

"There you go, another expense," Tony says. "Things are pretty tight."

For now, neighbors are keeping an eye out. One spotted an older model black Bronco leaving with the trailer.

Tony Morgan is hoping the sheriff's office will find the driver.

"I wish they'd tie him up and drag him down the road," Tony says.

"It may become the difference in being in business and not being in business anymore," Karen says.

The Morgan's have filed several police reports, and are offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of their items.

The sheriff's office is investigating, and hoping the stolen items turn up for resale.

If you have any information, call the McMinn County Sheriff's Office at (423) 745-5613.
