CHATTANOOGA (UTC) -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team used a walk-off RBI single from Ninjja Suetsugu to clinch a 9-8 win over UAB in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Frost Stadium.
The Lady Mocs (28-14) were forced to settle for a split, however, after a 6-3 loss to the Blazers in the nightcap. The loss snapped UTC's 15-game home winning streak.
Freshman outfielder Cheyenne Willis and sophomore outfielder Stephanie Rieck combined for eight hits at the top of the lineup in the doubleheader.
Chattanooga bats connected on three home runs on the day, with Jessica Traxler and Sara Beth Roberts hitting back-to-back solo shots in the opener. Vivian Morimoto added her eleventh homer of the season in game two.
Michelle Fuzzard and Kasey Tydingco each had multi-hit games, while Roberts, Suetsugu and Morimoto tallied multi-RBI contests.
The Blazers countered with a combined six home runs in the two games, which scored 13 of their 14 runs on the day. Kayla Orr blasted two homers and Kristen McGrath added another in the opener, while Heather Pearson, Catherine Crawford and Whitney Fletcher rounded the bases in game two.
Earning the game one win in relief was Fuzzard, who tossed 2.1 innings and struckout five. Taylor Deason threw the first 4.2 innings and fanned five.
Fuzzard (12-7) gave up five runs in the second inning and was tagged with the game two loss before Deason threw 5.1 strong innings of relief with two strikeouts.
