Proposed gun range a nightmare for nearby daycare

Posted: Updated:

CHICKAMAUGA, GA (WRCB) -- It's 30 minutes into nap time at the Academy For Little People in Chickamauga. Parents and workers fear that a proposed gun range will ruin the peace.

It's a wake-up call for director Sharon Armour. "We don't want our kids hearing gunshots going off throughout the day," she says.

A businessman who owns a gun shop in Fort Oglethorpe is looking to build an outdoor range at a, now vacant, farmers equipment shop on Highway 27 just outside the Chickamauga Battlefield. The proposal states the range will be used for firearm training and calls for manufacturing ammunition.

Armour has been rallying parents to fight it since she learned about it last week. "Our first concern is with the safety of the children," Armour says. "Anytime there are firearms going off within 500 feet of kids, there is always a chance for danger. Stray bullets is a concern."

Parents understand the risk is low,  but even a low risk adds to the worry. Brandy Garner, "I'm sure they are shooting in the opposite direction but it is nerve-racking to think anyone would be shooting across the street from a school."

According to the city zoning office, there are no rules on how close a shooting range can be to another business. If this happens, the gun range would be about 300 feet from the kids playground.

We checked with the State of Georgia Zoning Association and cities get to make their own rules.

Armour hopes the city council will put this proposal in permanent "time out." "One of our thought is if children keep hearing guns go off all day, what kind of message are we sending them."

The daycare director has issued a petition to oppose the gun range.

The first hearing will be Thursday April 19th at the Chickamauga Civic center at 7 P.M.

The business owner was not available for an interview Monday.
