Dalton, Whitfield Co. to participate in National Drug Take Back

Posted: Updated:

DALTON, GA (WRCB) -- As part of a national effort to combat the abuse of prescription drugs, the Dalton Police Department is partnering with the Whitfield County/Murray County Drug Free Coalition and Whitfield County Sheriff's Office to participate in the US Drug Enforcement Agency's Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 28th.  The event will give citizens a chance to dispose of any out of date or unused prescription medications in a safe way.

There will be multiple sites set up in the area where residents can dispose of any expired or unused prescription medications from 10 am until 2 pm on April 28th.

The Dalton Police Department will be joining volunteers from the Drug Free Coalition at the Community Center on Fredrick Street and the K-Mart on West Walnut Avenue.

The Whitfield County Sheriff's Office will be set up with volunteers at White's Pharmacy at 2955 Cleveland Highway and also the Whitfield County School District central office at 1306 Thornton Avenue.

Unused prescription medications often sit in medicine cabinets where they can fall into the hands of kids or other people with access to the home.  Rather than leaving potentially dangerous prescription drugs in a medicine cabinet or throwing them out, this event provides a safe way to get rid of medications that assures they won't be abused.

The April 28th event will be the fourth time that the US Drug Enforcement Administration will host a Drug Take Back Day.  During the most recent Drug Take Back Day, held nationwide on October 29, 2011, Americans turned in more than 188.5 tons of unwanted or expired medications for safe disposal.
