(WRCB) -- Benjamin Roberts formally announced Friday that he plans to contend in August's Democratic primary election for the chance to face off against Republican incumbent Sen. Bob Corker in November.
Roberts descends from a long line of Democrats, ranging from soldiers and explorers under the command of President Andrew Jackson to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first vice president John Nance Garner, who is his great great granduncle.
"Like my family members, I am passionate about the world around us, and eager to contribute," said Roberts. "The recent political climate has motivated me to get involved in the political process, because politicians are completely out of touch with the people they represent."
He continued, "They have made greedy and irrational decisions, which affect everyone in the nation, their children, and their grandchildren."
Roberts was born in Lebanon, TN and grew up in Jasper, TN. He has a BS from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is currently a private contractor in the construction field, a family-owned business. Roberts has volunteered in local community projects for years, helping children and the elderly.
Having lived his adult life around small business owners, Roberts says he is "deeply concerned" with creating programs that can help businesses and families thrive.
