Volkswagen announces record first quarter

(WRCB) – Volkswagen officials say they've delivered a record number of vehicles for the first quarter.

With increased sales in North America and Asia, VW says the have delivered 1.36 million passenger cars to customers between January and March. It's a ten and a half percent increase over last year.

The Wolfsburg-based company also reports a single month record, delivering 536,000 cars in March of this year, up 14.6 percent over last March. The automaker says it is the first time in their history they have delivered more than half a million cars in a single month.

While the situation on the markets in Europe remains difficult, we reported significant growth in North America and Asia," Christian Klingler, Board Member for Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, commented in Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

Despite the present situation on markets in Southern Europe, the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand grew deliveries on the overall European market in the first quarter to 441,800 units. While deliveries in Western Europe (excluding Germany) dropped slightly to 232,600, deliveries in Central and Eastern Europe rose by a substantial 61.8 percent to 60,200 vehicles.

The already high level of deliveries in Russia continued to develop well, with the number of vehicles handed over to customers doubling to 35,800. In the home market of Germany, Volkswagen Passenger Cars delivered 149,000 vehicles to customers.

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand grew deliveries in particular outside Europe. In the Asia / Pacific region, the brand posted a 13.7 percent rise in deliveries for the period to March, handing over 540,600 vehicles to customers. 483,400 vehicles were delivered on the region's largest single market of China (incl. Hong Kong) during the same period. First-quarter deliveries also developed very well on the American continent.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars increased deliveries in the North America region by 27.6 percent to 135,700 vehicles, of which 94,400 models were handed over to new owners in the United States. In the South America region, deliveries rose by 3.9 percent to 190,400 units.
