Dalton Police seek man in theft of lost wallet

Posted: Updated:

DALTON, GA (WRCB) -- The Dalton Police Department is asking for the public's help with identifying a man who stole a wallet containing more than $400 cash after it was accidentally left on a counter in an area convenience store.  The suspect was photographed by the store's surveillance system.

The incident happened shortly before noon on March 30th at a convenience store at 1002 Underwood Street in Dalton.  The victim bought a lottery ticket, leaving his wallet on the counter as he put the ticket into his shirt pocket.  The victim then walked out of the store, leaving the wallet behind.

The next man in line was the suspect in the theft, a Hispanic man wearing a white collared short-sleeved shirt and tan or khaki colored pants.  The suspect collected the change from his purchase and walked out of the store, leaving the wallet on the counter.

However, the next man in line saw the wallet and assumed the suspect had left it behind.  This man is recorded on surveillance calling out to the man and stopping him, handing him the wallet.

Instead of correcting the good Samaritan, the suspect took the wallet and walked away from the store.  When the victim realized that he'd left his wallet behind, he returned to the store to find that it was gone.

Anyone with information on this incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to please contact Officer Brandon Daugherty at (706) 278-9085, extension 255.
