Pocket Wilderness closed for rope removal

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Changes are coming to a popular park after two teens are rescued this week.

A spokesperson for TDEC tells Channel 3, the North Chickamauga Natural Trail, known as Pocket Wilderness, will be closed until Saturday for maintenance.

A 16-year-old girl hurt her leg and 18-year-old man broke his foot on home-made rope swings within 24 hours of each other.

Crews will be removing the swings near the Blue Hole.

Both rescues took several hours.

"Parks has been in there so many times to cut the ropes down, but unfortunately the ropes appear again, and we keep having all these accidents," Hamilton County EMS Spokeswoman Amy Maxwell says. "The next thing they are going to look into is cutting the trees down."

TDEC hopes to reopen the gates early Saturday morning, in time for hikers.
