Dalton Police seek identity of copper wire thieves

Posted: Updated:

DALTON, GA (WRCB) -- The Dalton Police Department is asking for the public's help with identifying two men who broke into an industrial building three times in March to steal copper wiring. While the suspects both wore masks, investigators are hoping that someone may recognize either their clothes or a detail of the crime.

The incidents happened at a Mohawk Industries building at 300 Brookhollow Industrial Boulevard.  The first reported break-in happened over the weekend of March 9th.  The suspects weren't able to get away with any wiring, but they did more than $2,000 worth of damage to the building as they forced a door to make entry and then tried to strip out wiring behind two electrical panels.

The second break-in happened during the night of March 14th, when the suspects again forced a door to gain entry into the building.  This time, a 300 foot length of copper wire was stolen along with more wire and other items from the building which were left in the woods nearby, apparently to be collected later.

During this break-in, the suspects also apparently tried to "hotwire" a scissor lift, which was rendered inoperable by the damage.  The building was broken into a third time on March 23rd.  This time, the suspects were captured on video.  Again, they made entry by forcing a back door to the building.

While they were unable to strip any new copper wiring, they were able to steal the lengths of wire that they'd left behind during the second incident, which had since been moved back inside of the building.

During the third incident, the suspects were recorded by surveillance cameras. The suspects wore jeans and also masks. One wore a jacket with a distinctive yellow stripe down one sleeve.

Anyone with any information on these crimes is asked to please contact Detective Ricky Long at 706-278-9085, extension 168.
