CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - It's easy to make a good day turkey hunting a great day by having all necessary equipment ready to go on opening day. Turkey hunting can take you into some very rugged terrain, so traveling as light as possible and still carrying the right equipment can take some planning. If I tried to carry every piece of equipment made for turkey hunting, I would need a 4-wheeler and cart to haul it all.
Here is a simple checklist that may help to make your great day turkey hunting.
- Have shot gun or bow patterned or sighted for turkey hunting; 5 rounds of ammo should be more than enough.
- Small light weight seat cushion for a comfortable set-up.
- Calls: carry 2 or 3, the ones that you have the most skill and confidence in and maybe one with a little different sound.
- Light-weight quick set-up decoy.
- Full camouflage is an extra edge; snake boots always a smart choice.
- Insect repellent: pre treat your camouflage, but be sure to use only as directed.
- Good quality vest made for turkey hunting, but light as possible.
- Small tube of matches, a good small LED light, water in a quite container, and a cell phone for emergencies.
- Locator call and ground blind and seat if necessary.
- Always think safety, you may sound like a turkey, but don't ever look like one.
Hope you have that great day turkey hunting, carry a light, think smart, think safe and good luck!
