Southside Salon pampers pregnant teens

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- It's every young woman's dream,a free day at the beauty salon.

The Southside Salon won a contest, and they chose pregnant teens from the Choices for Pregnancy Resource Center to pamper for the day.

It's no surprise why they chose that charity. The owner of Southside Salon and several of her employees are students of the choices for pregnancy center.

The owner was pregnant at 15, and before seeking help, she says it seemed like the end of the world.

"She didn't have to keep me," says Katie Johnston, the owner's daughter. "It would of been easier probably to not have kept me. She gave up everything."

Katie Johnston is her mother's greatest accomplishment. And her mother Jennifer Ward, owner of the Southside Salon, has the Choices for Pregnancy Resource Center to thank for it.

"A lot of times abortion seems like the only way out and the easiest way out. They provide lots of ways for young girls to keep their kid, learn how to take care of them and to be successful," says Ward.

Twenty-one years later Jennifer is paying it forward.

Her salon was chosen by Matrix as the only one in the state to represent their Spread the Love 2012 campaign.

Jennifer choose pregnant teens from choices for an all expenses paid makeover.

"It's really neat. I've never had my hair done like this, nails, makeup, it's a girls dream," says Rhiannlyn Hudson.

Hudson has a two-week-old baby boy. She was thankful for the relaxing day, and more than thankful for what choices has done for them.

Hudson says she's suggested it to every pregnant teen she meets, all in hopes that they can look past the early struggles that Jennifer Ward did.

"To see them grow up and be successful, graduate high school and go to college, which I didn't get to do," Ward says. "That's been the most wonderful thing for me."

Because the Southside Salon has been selected by Matrix and the Spread the Love Campaign, you can vote for their blog to help the local salon win up to $20,000.
